Consulting proposal template

Consulting is hard to buy because the client cannot see the work in advance. This template makes it visible: a diagnostic that ends in a written summary, a roadmap they can hold you to, six weeks of support while the first changes go in, and a handover report. Each stage has a deliverable and its own price, so the client is approving outcomes, not hours.

How to scope and price it

  • Price the diagnostic separately and charge for it. It is where you do the thinking, and a separate line stops it from being treated as a free sales call.
  • Name the deliverable at each stage: a written summary, a roadmap, a closing report. Clients accept a fee more easily when they can say what they will hold at the end.
  • Cap implementation support in time, here six weekly calls. Open-ended support turns a fixed fee into unpaid work.
  • If you prefer a day rate, keep the stages and put the days next to each line. The structure stays the same and the client still sees where the money goes.

The terms, and why

Splitting payment 40, 30 and 30 across the roadmap and the end of support keeps cash flow steady and gives the client a clear point to pause. The clause about access to people and documents matters most, because a diagnostic stalls when interviews are not scheduled. The last line says results depend on the client acting on the advice, which is accurate and avoids promising an outcome you do not control.
